This is the story of a young girl, Kopano, from the Eastern Cape who dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon

Why this BackaBuddy campaign?

In February this year a young woman took a taxi on the long and exhausting journey to Cape Town from her home in a small village near Matatiele in the foothills of the Drakensberg where she lives with her foster grandmother.  A gift from a local businessman had enabled her to buy some warm woolly jumpers, an extra pair of shoes and a few toiletries.  Until then, her clothing had consisted solely of her school uniform and school winter coat.  Her background is one of extreme deprivation. 

That young woman, Kopano Makhetha, matriculated last year at Mariazell high school with phenomenal results (tap on photo above) - especially remarkable in a class that achieved only a 67% pass rate, and was now traveling south to start her first year at UCT Medical School - my alma mater - on her journey to become the neurosurgeon she once only dreamed of being.  That she is now able to follow this path is...
