On 26 September 2024, in 15 short minutes, our family's entire life changed. My sons and I managed to get out in time but my husband - desperately trying to save our property and animals - could only look on in horror when our home went up in flames.
People always ask, as a joke, “what would you pack when your house is on fire?” Everyone has a list. But when your husband tells you to start packing, just incase, you pack an overnight bag. You think you will return. You believe it is merely a precaution. But when he phones and says “get the children and go - now!' you go. Never thinking this will be the last time you will leave the house you built-up and stayed in for 17 years.
Our home… the one that my husband restored by himself, where our children grew up and has ever known. The home where we taught them a love for life and nature, was destroyed in a veld fire, that soon turned into a hellish runaway wildfire because of strong high winds.
Black ruins are all that is left except for:
