Dean is a fine 21-year-old young man from Durbanville, sharing a home with his brother and doing everything he can to build a better future.

But Dean’s story hasn’t been easy.

He grew up without the stability every child deserves — effectively abandoned by his parents and left to navigate life on his own. He is one of four siblings. Two of his siblings are living in separate places, facing similar unstable and difficult circumstances. One parent has left the country entirely. The other remains in the area, yet has chosen to have no interest or involvement in Dean’s life. 
No safety net. No guidance. Just resilience.

I met Dean two years ago when I moved into the complex and he asked if he could wash my car. That simple request spoke volumes. He wasn’t asking for handouts — he was asking for work.

Since then, he has shown up consistently. Washing cars. Doing odd jobs. Actively seeking employment. Refusing to give up. All while carrying the weight of a past he did not choose.
