I met Lilian about five years ago when I hired her through the #Sweepsouth app. From the very first day, we clicked, and she quickly became my regular cleaner - though, in truth, she became much more than that. She became a friend.

This past week, Lilian was at home, in Joe Slovo, Cape Town, preparing to welcome her and her husband’s baby into the world. She hadn’t been feeling well, but she was comforted knowing that her loving husband, Talent Gono, was by her side, caring for her between his work shifts. When I called to check in yesterday, she sounded so hopeful. “We are so excited… pray for me, Jeannie,” she said. She had been anxious about possibly needing a C-section, which the clinic said might become necessary.  

Then, in the early hours of this morning - Thursday, February 20th - Lilian’s waters broke. Happiness! At last baby was coming. Her husband quickly ordered an Uber to take them to Dunoon Hospital. When the car arrived, he went downstairs with her hospital bag. 

He never made it back inside to help his wife to the Uber.
