The Little Givers creche and kindergarten in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch, plays a vital role in the lives of 21 children who are living in poverty and overcrowded conditions.
Their parents face unemployment or seasonal employment, and the children reside in small wooden wendy-houses with an average of 15 people per unit. These living conditions severely impact their education and overall development, as they lack privacy and quality time for homework.
The creche and kindergarten aim to counteract these challenges by providing stimulating learning and socialization opportunities for the children. However, the costs associated with running the facility (including salaries, maintenance, utilities, rent, food, and cleaning) require a monthly fee of R550 per child. Unfortunately, this fee exceeds what the parents can afford, although they contributed 32 percent of the costs in 2021.
