Luca: The Liver Cancer Warrior

Luca is a vibrant two year old girl from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. At just 14 months old she was diagnosed with a pretext IV hepatoblastoma, a childhood stage 4 liver cancer.

She has received 11 cycles of chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumour so it can be removed surgically. Unfortunately, the tumour is unresectable and the only cure is a liver transplant.

Her parents are being considered as live donors to reduce the waiting time for a suitable liver. 

A major procedure like this can cost up to R1 700 000 (including the workup, surgery and postoperative care). The donor requires an additional R700 000 for the workup, harvesting of the liver and postoperative care. The family has medical aid, but unfortunately it will not cover 100% of the medical cost. 

The surgery will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa. Luca and her parents are expected to be away from home and work for a minimum of 6 weeks to 6 months.
