Ma Se Kind: Sponsor Careers in Education

BACK STORY:

Whilst doing some school visits in the Mitchell's Plain area in Cape Town, 3 members of our board asked a few learners about what they plan to do as a career. To our delight, we heard things like Nurse, Pilot, etc. Our little pilot was Thabu. Unfortunately, the school they were in did not accommodate Pure Mathematics as a subject any longer - at least not for that year, or possibly, any future years. Who's going to tell Thabu that his dreams of becoming a pilot may not happen?

This is not an uncommon story. Let’s say a child in Grade 8 says, “I want to be a pilot.” They don’t yet know that without Pure Mathematics, they will never qualify for aviation school. Or for engineering. Or medicine. Or architecture. Or data science. No one tells them their school dropped the subject. No one tells them they’ve already been rerouted—before they even took off.

At Ma Se Kind, we call this the miscarriage of dreams. Silent. Systemic. Heartbreaking.
