Hi, I’m Maeve. I am a 22-year-old transgender woman, activist, and aspiring linguist living in Cape Town. After years of navigating my transition independently, I am asking for your help to take the final, most significant step in my journey: gender-affirming surgery (vaginoplasty).
Gender-affirming surgery is life-saving healthcare, yet it remains inaccessible for most. In South Africa, government waiting lists exceed 25 years, and medical aids categorise these essential procedures as cosmetic, refusing to cover them. As I prepare to start my Honours in Linguistics at UCT in 2026, I am faced with a R240,000 cost that I simply cannot meet alone.
Choosing to transition was the best decision I've ever made. I started HRT in 2022, and it's restored colour to my life, alleviating discomfort that was previously inescapable. Since I began transitioning, I have dedicated myself to my studies and my community – some of my proudest achievements include:
