Two years ago, Malcolm Katz was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a devastating progressive disease that slowly takes away the body’s ability to move and function. Since that diagnosis, Malcolm and his family have been navigating the realities of living with this condition while remaining surrounded by the friends and community who care deeply about him.

Many people will recognise Malcolm from the years he spent as owner of Plettenberg Bay’s Mugg & Bean. With his warm smile and easy, welcoming manner, Malcolm was always ready with one of his legendary jokes and quickly became someone people genuinely looked forward to seeing. Over the years he has become a familiar and respected figure in the broader Plett community, held in high regard by friends, neighbours, and many local community leaders. Malcolm has always been deeply social, happiest when surrounded by friends, sharing music, playing backgammon, and bringing people together.
