My name is Mentholia Maupa, and I'm 55 years old. On June 20, 2023, my vibrant, tenacious and determined younger sister, Mildred Maupa, known affectionately as Malefu, set out from her home for her usual day at the office.
Malefu is a devoted mother to three daughters and a son, aged 24, 12, 9 and 17, respectively.
Just an hour before leaving, she complained of severe stomach pains. Then, three hours later, she collapsed at work, prompting a frantic rush to the hospital. Five days later, she emerged from a coma, but it was evident that she was a changed person. Completely reliant on nurses and family for care.
Devastating news came when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Hepatocellular carcinoma, an aggressive form of liver cancer. Given her weakened state, chemo was not recommended by her doctors.
On August 30, 2023, the doctors advised Malefu to transition to hospice care upon her discharge. However, as a family, we made the heartfelt decision to care for her at home. Unfortunately, bureaucratic delays meant it took 1.5 months for her...
