About This Campaign
My mother, Marisa Matthysen, has been a Parkinsons patient since 2009, and was forced into early retirement 6 years ago because of this. Because this disease is inevitably deteriorating, we have sought help and advice from countless doctors and specialists - KZN, Bloemfontein, Pretoria.. The disease really started affecting my mother so badly and intensely - simple tasks became completely impossible : cooking, making a cup of coffee, a simple sandwich, and then bigger things such as using and operating a cell phone has become non-existant in her life, the ability to drive, read, write, all gone. From the most independant woman, a legend of a Gr 1 Teacher all her life, she has become a fully dependant patient.
She ultimately underwent the highly risky and serious DBS procedure - Deep Brain Stimulation which involves implanting electrodes within areas of the brain. The electrodes produce electrical impulses that affect brain activity to treat medical conditions, such as Parkinsons - DBS has been associated with significant improvements in the quality of life for many patients...
