Bekezela Creche was established in March 2022 in the Bekezela informal settlement in Johannesburg, home to about 1 000 people, mostly reclaimers and their families. Three volunteers from the community have been running the facility without payment ever since, providing some of the 30 children under the age of seven much-needed access to early childhood development.
The nurturing and dedicated educational space with three rooms was created with the help of the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO), Mimosa school and the Reggio community, and a number of caring individuals and groups, including the parents. Various communities donated toys and materials.
No compensation
While receiving coaching from Mimosa school staff and the Africa Reggio Emilia Alliance to ensure quality education, teachers Melphy Silwana and Funeka Mbadu have been running the school without any payment.
