In 2019 at the tender age of 12 years old, my daughter Mercedi was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus (SLE), Systemic, referring to the whole body including organs. Lupus, latin meaning for Wolf. SLE is an autoimmune disease which aggressively and relentlessly attacks the healthy cells and organs in your body. Mercedi missed her first year of high school, Grade 8 due to her being sick for most of that year. She has missed out so much of her adolescent life including having to give up her favourite sports and hobbies such as swimming, hockey, athletics, modern and contemporary dancing and soccer due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Last minute cancellations to hang out with her friends at a birthday party because of a Lupus Flare became the new norm.
Mercedi is only 18 years of age and in Grade 12 this year, the most important, long awaited and most exciting period of her school career. She has already missed out the first month of this exhilarating experience.
