Some pain does not announce itself loudly. It simply starts taking things away from you.

I am Monique. I was nine years old when I came home from school and couldn’t get up. We were told it was just growing pains, but soon I couldn’t walk properly or even return to school. That Christmas, while other children were opening presents, my family and I were told I had Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, arthritis in a child. Alongside the pain came something quieter, but just as heavy: loneliness.

Since 2018, the Arthritis Foundation of South Africa has been by my side. They helped me feel less alone and gave me the chance to share my story, so others could feel less alone too. That is why I am proud to be part of JointForce, the Foundation’s community of monthly donors.
