National Hero – Marius Van Der Merwe
On the evening of the 5th of December as Marius and his wife, Leanne and two young sons, Grayson and Oliver were arriving home after having an evening out as a family, Marius was tragically murdered in front of his wife and two young sons.
Marius was witness D in the Madlanga Commission Inquiry and provided valuable statements against corrupt members of authorities.
Within his community, he is hailed a hero for his fight against “Zama-zamas” and the removal of Plastic City that has tainted the town and residence of Brakpan for many years. Marius was brave, resilient and always remained hopeful in all circumstances. Marius was a selfless man who did everything he could for his family and community.
Marius is survived by his wife Leanne and their two sons as well as two sons from a previous marriage.
News broke of Marius’ death and a community, friends, family and the whole nation were unprepared for the massive hole he has left and are determined to seek justice for him.
