Nicole is just 12 years old — a bright, adventurous girl who loves swimming, tennis, and the color purple, and who dreams of one day becoming a teacher so she can care for others the way she cares for everyone around her. But instead of chasing that dream, Nicole has spent the last stretch of her childhood fighting for her life.
How It Began
Her mother, Martha, received the kind of news no parent should ever have to hear: her daughter had a tumour in her lung. The warning sign was terrifying — Nicole had started coughing up blood. Doctors scheduled an urgent lobectomy for December 3rd, at a cost of R35,000, with an immediate R17,500 deposit needed just to get Nicole into the operating room. Martha, a single mother of three and her family's only breadwinner, had nowhere to turn — no bank would lend to her, no safety net existed to catch her. All she had was hope, and the kindness of strangers.
