My name is Nicole Bernard, and I am a 30-year-old single mother of three beautiful children. I am writing this today not only for myself, but for my children who need their mother alive and well.
I’ve been diagnosed with Stage 5 Renal Failure (End Stage Kidney Disease), a condition caused by Lupus, and I’ve been relying on dialysis three times a week just to stay alive. Each session lasts four hours and has kept me going as I fight for my life.
I recently began the process to receive a life-saving kidney transplant. My mother, who is 50 years old, is a perfect donor match. We completed all the necessary tests and were just weeks away from surgery that could have given me a second chance at life.
But on July 31, 2025, everything changed.
I was removed from my father's medical aid because of my age. Despite being critically ill and unable to work, my status as an “adult” has disqualified me from continued coverage. As a result:
My transplant has been put on hold.
