Ouma's urgent knee surgery

In 2012, my grandmother lost her husband to lung cancer, leaving her without housing, financial, and food security. My parents took her in, providing shelter, food, and family support.

A few years later, my father fell into alcoholism, which left our family destitute. My brothers and I had to step up to support our household, with my grandmother playing a monumental role in holding us together. During this time, we also lost our father, but through the struggles, our grandmother remained the glue that kept us going.

Today, while our situation has improved, it is now my grandmother who needs help. She desperately requires knee surgery costing R150,000. With no medical aid and a long waitlist at public hospitals, her condition worsens daily, leaving her in constant pain and unable to enjoy the simple joys of life.
