“Hello, my name is Liahkim Chade Fortuin. I was born on 16 October 2022, but came into the world much sooner & smaller than most babies — only 1.2 kilograms. The doctors told my parents I had amniotic band syndrome, which caused my right foot’s blood flow to be restricted, while still in my Moms womb. I had a natural amputation (similar to the way one's umbilical cord falls off) from the ankle down, this, just days after I was born. My right fingers — the pinky, index, middle, and ring — were fused together by a band and most of my nailbeds are underdeveloped, meaning no nails present. Oh, I almost forgot to mention my left foot is missing 3 toes, the biggest included, so my balance is seriously off…
I spent more than two months in hospital with my Mom before I was strong enough to finally go home. Soon after, I needed a blood transfusion because my hemoglobin was very low.
