Hi everyone, I come to you today with the heaviest heart.
Ruan is only 9 years old — a bright, loving, playful little boy — and right now, he’s fighting for his life in ICU.
It all started on Wednesday, the 13th of August, when Ruan developed a high fever of 39°. His grandmother rushed him to the clinic, but instead of getting better, he grew worse. Over the next few days, the family went from clinic to pharmacy to private doctors, desperate for answers. His fever climbed to 41°, and then came the seizures — one after another, without stopping.
On the 21st of August, after days of continuous seizures, Ruan was placed into a medically induced coma and put on life support. The doctors ran countless tests, changed medications again and again, and fought alongside him every step of the way.
He was later transferred to Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered that he has encephalitis — a severe inflammation of the brain — caused by an autoimmune disease. The swelling has caused his brain to shrink, and despite all the treatments, the seizures...
