Ousie

In many South African homes, duty is inherited, silence is expected, and saying “no” comes at a cost. 

We are a crew of young South African filmmakers, made up of a mix of AFDA and UCT students and recent graduates. With the knowledge we were privilege enough to consume we wish to create and share stories rooted in the many geographies we as a country emerge from. 

We have collectively embarked on the journey of creating a short film titled 

Ousie  

Following their grandmother's passing, a dutiful sister and her indifferent brother are pulled together into survival mode, negotiating memory, the spectres of the past and present , and the futile cost of aspirations and dreams.  

With the films narrative roots being grounded in a historically abundant reality for many South Africans and their familial structures, the film thematically speaks to audiences in its fight for self-determination, agency, and the right to say ‘no’ to the multifaceted and many forms...
