About This Campaign

Campaign Background
African penguins are disappearing, fast. Once numbering in the millions, fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remain in the wild today. Their decline is a stark warning that our oceans are under increasing pressure from overfishing, climate change, and habitat disruption.
Through Project Penguin, this campaign is raising funds to support the vital work of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT), a leading marine conservation organisation based in Kleinbaai near Gansbaai, South Africa. Founded in 2005 by conservationist Wilfred Chivell, DICT is dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems through research, conservation, and community engagement.
A key part of this work is the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS), established in 2015 to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured and oiled seabirds. Alongside this, DICT leads critical research and conservation efforts to protect African penguin colonies, monitor marine species such as sharks and whales, and safeguard important breeding and feeding grounds along the Overstrand coast.
