My name is Shane Meyer, and for years, I have dedicated my life to walking alongside people in their darkest moments. Those battling addiction, substance dependence, and mental health crises every single day. My work as an AOD Recovery Clinician and Mental Health Professional is not just a career. It is a calling.

Every day I sit with individuals who have lost everything: their families, their dignity, their will to live. And every day I help them find a reason to keep going.

But here is the reality that nobody talks about. The professionals doing this work are often just as financially stretched as the communities they serve. The mental health and addiction crisis in South Africa is enormous, and those of us on the frontlines frequently absorb that weight at great personal cost.

To continue practising ethically and credibly, I need to maintain two critical professional memberships. My PsySSA membership is with the Psychological Society of South Africa, and my NAADAC membership is with the National Association for Addiction Professionals in the United States. Bot...
