Retreat’s New Sunbird Garden

Growing a fynbos sanctuary for plants, birds and people

A dream is underway in Retreat, Cape Town. 

From concept to plan and now into action, Crestway High School is implementing a new garden project. An ambitious collaborative effort to transform vacant land on the school’s premises into an outdoor learning space for the school and community. This new garden contributes significantly to Ingcungcu’s vision of creating a Sunbird Pathway across the Cape Flats, strengthening the connection between isolated patches of fynbos, providing filling stations for sunbirds and connecting urban youth and communities to nature.

Help us turn this vision into reality!

The project will expand the school’s existing fynbos garden by rehabilitating an additional 900 square meters of degraded land. By planting a variety of locally sourced fynbos and trees, this initiative supports local biodiversity, creating a vital green space for plants, birds and people.
