Before the medals, before the qualifying time, before any of it, there was just a skinny kid in Johannesburg who didn't like how he looked or felt.
Bongane Lukhele, known to everyone as Bongza, didn't have a coach. He didn't have a mentor. He didn't come through an academy or a development programme. He figured it out alone. Fell in love with training in high school, studied it, became a personal trainer, and built a life around the discipline of showing up every single day.
At the African Championship, Bongza finished in 51 minutes and 2 seconds, 2nd in his age category. That result qualified him for the Deadly Dozen World Championships at Crystal Palace, London, 5 to 6 September 2026.
The Deadly Dozen is 12 labour stations with 400m runs between each. Farmers carries, deadlifts, snatches, lunges, bear crawls, overhead carries and more. Your body looks for a reason to quit from station four. What separates the finishers from the rest is willpower. Bongza has it.
