My name is Carike Schoeman and I am an information specialist at the Medical Library in the University of Pretoria’s (UP) Department of Library Services. I am also a proud UP alumna.
My serious cycling journey began in 2017 after a friend invited people on Facebook to join him on mountain bikes to get fitter. I thought, “Why not?” That decision brought adventure, friendships, laughter and challenges I never imagined taking on, including the full 100-mile Race to the Sun in 2023.
Ride Joburg and I have quite a history. My first attempt in 2018 ended when I missed the 42 km cut-off by just two minutes. I returned determined to finish and have since alternated between the shorter and longer routes, occasionally declaring myself done with the long race. Somehow, I keep coming back!
