In the Cape Flats (South Africa), it’s not uncommon to see young girls walking the streets, sometimes during the day, but often at night.

You see them in small groups, sometimes alone… not because they want to be there, but because they are searching for something.
A place to belong.
A moment of safety.
Even just a small glimpse of hope.

Many of these girls are growing up in environments where gender-based violence (GBV), instability, and hardship are part of everyday life. And while we may not always see their full stories, we know this, they deserve more.

The idea for the Girls Beaded Picnic: Sowing a Seed was born from these moments.
From seeing these girls, and asking: What if we could give them a different space, even if just for a few hours?

A space that feels safe.
A space that feels soft.
A space that reminds them they are still children, and that they matter.
