Hi, my name is Shané Swanepoel.

At just 16 years old, I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the communication between nerves and muscles. While I have lived with this condition for many years, my health took a devastating turn in December 2025.

Since then, I have endured repeated hospital admissions and spent months in ICU after my lungs collapsed twice, leaving me dependent on ventilator support to survive.

Today, simple everyday activities that many of us take for granted, such as walking, swallowing, eating, and even breathing, have become daily challenges. I require ongoing treatments, medication, and plasma exchanges while doctors work tirelessly to determine the best course of treatment. Unfortunately, many of these life-sustaining treatments are not fully covered by medical aid, placing an overwhelming financial burden on my family.
