Stand with Nev

If you've ever met Nev, you'll know he's much more than a barber. For years, he's done far more than cut hair, he's built friendships, shared laughs, offered advice and made people feel welcome. To so many people in Durban, Nev is a friend, a familiar face and someone who genuinely cares.

On Wednesday, 24 June, everything changed.

While at work doing what he loved, Nev suddenly collapsed after suffering a stroke. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered a stroke in his cerebellum that was putting dangerous pressure on his brainstem. Although he gradually lost his hearing, some movement and parts of his speech, he remained conscious.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, his condition deteriorated dramatically. A second, much larger stroke caused severe swelling on his brain. Nev was rushed into emergency surgery, where doctors inserted an External Ventricular Drain to relieve the pressure. The surgery couldn't reverse the stroke, but it gave him the best possible chance of recovery.
