Anja's Story
Anja Duvenhage (19) has lived with epilepsy since infancy, yet she is an active horse rider, loves animals of all sizes, and supports the Springboks Rugby team passionately. She dreams of becoming an equine teacher.
On 24 December 2025, Anja was admitted to ICU, where she has remained under sedation and on a ventilator for over 50 days, enduring constant seizures despite the heavy sedation and repeated treatment adjustments. Doctors have identified the cause of the prolonged seizures but have not been able to calm her brain activity without deeper sedation.
She was transferred on 8 February from Mediclinic Midstream in Pretoria to Mediclinic Constantiaberg in Cape Town for specialized care in their neurological ward.
Her parents must also travel and stay in Cape Town now for an extended period of time, adding significant costs for accommodation, transport, and daily living on top of mounting medical bills not cover by Medical the aid, leaving the family under severe financial strain.
