I am 48 years old and I am married to a wonderful husband, and I am a mother to a beautiful daughter. We live in Cape Town.
My story
The week I was meant to start a new job… I was diagnosed with cancer
Before my cancer diagnosis, I resigned from my job and was preparing to start a new one.
I experienced some light bleeding and thought it was a hemorrhoid. I went in for a colonoscopy between jobs to check it and I expected a simple explanation and to receive some ointment or stitches.
Instead, I woke up to news that completely changed everything:
I have rectal cancer.
In one morning my world shifted to try to process this cancer diagnosis. There is a particular shock that comes with hearing words like this when you least expect them. Everything you thought was stable suddenly isn’t anymore. Your focus narrows to survival, appointments, tests and treatment decisions — while life outside keeps moving.
