Support needed for hospital stay

Dear friends and community,

Our son, Kegan, is a courageous cancer survivor with Down syndrome and paralyzed from the waist down and he is currently facing another tough challenge. He was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on December 30th, 2024, with a bacterial infection that caused severe swelling in his stomach, legs, and feet. His oxygen levels were critically low, and he has been reliant on oxygen ever since.

The doctors advised us to get a CPAP machine, which costs R14,000, in order for him to be discharged. Thanks to the generosity of two kind donors, we were able to purchase this machine, but now, the doctors have informed us that Kegan will need to remain in the hospital for further tests and sleep therapy to determine whether he has sleep apnea. This procedure will only be done in a week’s time.

We live in the Vaal Triangle but have been lucky enough to stay with family in Alberton to be closer to the hospital. This situation has put a strain on our finances, as my husband has had to take time off work to drive us to the hospital every day, and I do...
