About this campaign:
I am reaching out to you on behalf of my 47-year-old twin brother, Pierre, and our family.
We are launching this BackaBuddy campaign to support Pierre in his courageous battle against ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). ALS is a fatal type of motor neuron disease which causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and the brain. It is the same condition that well-known South African rugby player Joost van der Westhuizen succumbed to in February 2017.
The road to Pierre's ALS diagnosis has been a long, uphill battle which started in December 2022. A formal ALS diagnosis was made in March 2024.
On 17 May 2024, Pierre was admitted to hospital with a serious lung infection. He was immediately transferred to the ICU where he was confined to his bed for more than nine weeks. He had to have a tracheotomy, and a PEG tube inserted in his stomach as he...
