Last year, Shaz — a beautician whose gift has always been helping others feel beautiful — was given just a 1% chance to live after being struck by Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS). She spent eight weeks in a coma, her body burned and broken, while our mother, Nombuso, left her job to stay by her side every day, praying she would make it through.

The miracle is that Shaz survived. But the reality of her survival is something none of us could have imagined.

When she finally woke up, she had lost more than 35kg of muscle. She couldn’t walk. She was blind — her eyes sealed shut — and had no memory of what had happened. Through months of surgeries, doctors managed to save part of her eyesight — she now has 5% vision in one eye and 30% in the other.

Now, she faces a new fight: rebuilding the life that SJS tried to erase.
