REBUILDING TEMBISA RATANGA: FROM A DUMPING SITE TO A SAFE SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY.
Tembisa Ratanga is a non-profit organisation situated in the informal settlements of TR-section, Khayelitsha, started by Aphiwe Qhama Menziwa and Bongeka Hlela Qhanga. We offer a safe space in a not-so-safe place. We use education, art and sport as tools for community development and self-empowerment.
Over the last 8 years, Tembisa Ratanga has become a safe space for members of the community. Growing up in this community made us see a need for a safe space and accessible opportunities. We cleaned up a dumping site and turned it into a place of hope and safety. We offer a platform for people to showcase their talents, receive help with schoolwork, do yoga and engage in other sports and arts activities. We have hosted performances, from festivals and live music, to poetry sessions. We support our community with basic needs through our soup kitchen, clothing and sanitary...
