For months, one of the teenage boys we mentored kept his distance and refused to participate. When I eventually asked him why, he said:

“Do you blame me? Nobody ever continues to come back.”

He had seen people arrive with good intentions and new programmes before, but they seldom stayed. Trusting us meant risking disappointment again.

Those words stayed with me.

In June 2024, I began spending Friday evenings mentoring teenage boys growing up in institutional care, alongside two friends and brothers in Christ who shared the same heart.

At first, we thought they mainly needed guidance, encouragement and positive male role models. But as we kept returning, the relationships deepened.
