His name was Terrence.

He was nine years old and hadn’t walked in six months.

Terrence was living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy—a devastating, terminal disease. Yet on that day, Terrence changed my life forever.

In 2018, we held our very first Sailing Therapy Day. Ten children, each facing significant physical, emotional or socio-economic challenges. Our dream was simple: to give them more than a day on the water—we wanted to give them hope.

The children gathered excitedly at the water’s edge, ready to sail for the first time.

Every child climbed into a boat.

Every child except Terrence.

He sat quietly in his wheelchair, too weak to walk.

Then we heard his mother cry out.

“Terrence!”

With tears streaming down her face, we watched as he slowly climbed out of his wheelchair. One careful step. Then another. He walked across the grass towards the little sailboats—towards his dream.
