The Old Skool - a project for AfrikaBurn 2026

Somewhere out in the Tankwa dust stands an old schoolhouse. Its whitewashed cladding has been worn soft by the desert sun and scoured by the wind. Inside, the air hums with nostalgia - the faint smell of chalk and imagination. As the sun sets, the last of its rays are scattered by a prism, refracting a spectrum of memories in the dust.

The Old Skool stands as a tribute to the teachers who inspired us, the friends who shaped us, and the mischief that made us who we are. It’s a space for reflection, connection, and a good old-fashioned boogie - because some lessons, especially the ones about joy, are never forgotten.

By day, the space becomes a playground for creativity; inviting participants to host lighthearted activities — pop quizzes, recess games, poetry readings, storytelling circles. When darkness falls, The Old Skool transforms as 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s anthems echo down the school corridors and across the Tankwa plains.  It’s an assembly of dance and play – a graduation of the joy that live...
