On 16 August 2026, a fire destroyed the pub and 3 cabins at Johannesburg Skydiving Club (JSC) — a place that has been part of the South African skydiving community for decades.

For generations of skydivers, JSC has been more than a drop zone. It is where first jumps were made, licences earned, friendships formed, stories embellished, beers owed and occasionally paid, and a great many people found their tribe.

The fire took the building. It did not take the community.

Within hours, the clean-up had begun. What can be salvaged is being salvaged. Bricks are being cleaned for reuse. Materials, labour, equipment and expertise are already being offered. We have decided not simply to replace what was lost, but to build something worthy of what came before it.

We call it The Phoenix Project.

Our target is R150,000. The funds raised will contribute to the materials, infrastructure, services and essential costs of rebuilding the communal facilities destroyed by the fire. Wherever we can reuse, repair, repurpose or accept donated materials and l...
