About This Campaign

The Seed: cultivating a community of temple builders, and reviving the lost art of temple building through reverential play
For as long as people have built temples, they have built them together. The raising was always half the point: hands learning from hands, strangers becoming a community around something sacred they made together. Somewhere along the way, that art was nearly lost.
Mahala exists to revive it. We are a theme camp that has gathered on the Tankwa clay for ten years, and we believe the burn is one of the few places left where a community can still learn to raise a temple together. So we are using it as our school. Each year we build, and each year more people learn the craft, the geometry and the care that a temple asks for.
The longer vision reaches beyond the playa: a growing community of temple builders who, by 2030, raise a full AfrikaBurn Temple together, and who then carry that art home, building permanent, non-denominational temples in the wider world, open to anyone who needs a place to slow down and come home to themselves.
