Feed the Soil is a Cape Town based circular food initiative tackling a major environmental challenge: food waste. Every year, vast amounts of edible and organic food are thrown away, much of it ending up in landfill where it decomposes and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. At the same time, many small-scale farmers struggle to access affordable soil inputs and reliable markets for their produce.

Feed the Soil was created to connect these challenges and transform them into an opportunity. We collect food waste from households and restaurants and divert it away from landfill. This organic waste is then composted and turned into nutrient rich soil that helps regenerate land.

The compost is gifted to community farmers who use it to grow organic vegetables. We then purchase this produce back from the farmers and sell it at our local pop ups, creating a reliable route to market for their harvest while making fresh, seasonal food accessible to the public.
