An Extraordinary Young Athlete
On 3 March 2024, 15-year-old Anje Bezuidenhout achieved what many only dream of — she broke the Gauteng U17 High Jump record with an incredible jump of 1.74m, securing her place at the SA Athletics Championships.
But just days later, everything changed.
A Sudden Turn
On 7 March 2024, only a few days before she was meant to compete at the SA Championships, Anje suddenly lost mobility from her waist down. She was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) — a devastating blow that shattered her high jump dreams.
Despite this, Anje never gave up hope. She began therapy, determined that one day she would jump again and return to school life like any other high school student.
The Truth Revealed
Months of therapy followed, but on 15 September 2025, Anje was admitted to hospital once again under the care of a new doctor. After undergoing a lumbar puncture, MRI scans, and extensive blood tests, the results revealed heartbreaking news:
