Wheels for Inspector Madelyn

Late one night in Delmas, after a long and traumatic day at a chicken farm where thousands of birds had been left starving and resorted to cannibalism, Inspector Madelyn climbed into her bakkie, exhausted, scratched, and emotionally drained.

She had just spent hours assisting with a large-scale cull of suffering birds, doing the difficult work few ever see, and even fewer can stomach. It was nearly 11 pm, and she was finally heading home.

But her journey was far from over.

On a quiet, unlit road outside Delmas, Madelyn’s vehicle was suddenly struck by another driver. The impact flipped her bakkie. By some stroke of luck, she walked away uninjured. The bakkie, however, was completely written off.

Madelyn is part of the NSPCA’s Society Liaison Unit, a team that travels across South Africa to support SPCAs, and respond to urgent cruelty cases in hard-to-reach areas, which means they need to transport animals, food, and basic veterinary care to those in need.
