Wico Vlok School Elevator

Wico Vlok was born on 17 November 2016 with a birth defect called Spina Bifida with Chiari malformation. This open spine defect entailed that he was paralyzed from the waist down. In his first week after birth, he had two operations. The first one was to close the spine which caused fog build up in the brain. The second operation was to insert a shunt for this build up. The biggest operation he had when he was about two years old. This operation was to address the Chiari malformation where his neck vertebra was cut open to enlarge the strained area.

He had several more operations e.g., straightening his legs and ankle and to rectify a pilonidal sinus. In short, he is catheter bound and needs enemas for bowl movements.

Wico is a fun-loving boy that loves rugby and sports. He is a big Springbok supporter! He is currently attending Prieska Combined School in the Northern Cape province as a grade 3 pupil. The challenge that is looming for next year is that from grade 4 the pupils move to the other side of the school that is a double story building.
