Executive summary
Wolwekraal Nature Reserve near Prince Albert in the Karoo conserves local biodiversity and cultural heritage, teaches local people about their environment, conducts and shares research. To supplement the work of the nature reserve, we will build a lecture hall and library/archive in the village using a bequest from celebrated ornithologist Richard Dean. The total project cost is R1.3 million. We have R950,000 and are seeking R350,000 to complete this project.
Wolwekraal Nature Reserve is a jewel of the Karoo landscape. Earmarked in 2005 for its rich natural and cultural diversity by Karoo ecologists Richard and Sue Dean, the property was declared a protected area in 2011. It is lovingly managed by the Wolwekraal Conservation and Research Trust (IT000051/2025S), originally founded as a non-profit organization in 2013 (NPO121-079).
