South Africa continues to face one of the worst gender-based violence and femicide crises in the world, with 5,578 women murdered in 2023/24 and more than 115 rape cases reported every day. But behind these statistics are real people - a survivor trying to stay alive, a child living in fear, a family shattered forever.
For many survivors, the violence is only the beginning. What follows is fear, trauma, confusion, and systems that often fail them when they need help the most.
