Yolandi is a 47-year-old single mother and proud grandmother who runs a day and aftercare centre from her home in Standerton. Her days are filled with laughter and learning as she cares for children in her community — a role she cherishes deeply. But behind her warm smile is a woman enduring unimaginable physical pain and hardship.
Yolandi’s health challenges began in 2009 when she suffered a severe hip injury due to spousal abuse. Though she underwent surgery at Witbank Provincial Hospital, continued abuse until 2016 caused further damage. She now walks with a limp, having never received follow-up care. Her story is one of survival — enduring 19 years of physical and emotional abuse, yet never losing her spirit.
In 2020, Yolandi was misdiagnosed with three ovarian cysts on the right side of her abdomen. Treatment at Standerton Provincial Hospital was inconsistent due to medication shortages, The hospital eventually told her they could no longer assist, especially due to her low blood levels.
