Personal message

100 kilometres for milk!

Brett Green, a dairy farmer, on behalf of all of South Africa’s dairy farmers, is taking on the enormous challenge of the SkyRun 100 in November. The SkyRun 100 is unique, in that it is a truly self-supported and self-navigational race, where athletes tackle the remote terrain of the Witteberg Mountain range with a map, a compass, or a GPS unit, and a backpack containing all their food, water, and compulsory equipment that will enable them to survive in this harsh environment, while operating at an average height of between 2 200–2 500 meters above sea level.

Brett has decided, that if he is going to sweat it out, he wants to support a worthy cause like the #PayingMilkForward Campaign that was launched by the dairy farmers earlier this year, to raise much needed funds for distributing milk to the most vulnerable and desperate people in our beautiful country.

As we all know, the world has been faced with an unprecedented pandemic of COVID-19 since March this year.

We cannot ignore the fact that we live in one of the world's most unequal countries and that the pandemic and national lockdown has been destructive to so many livelihoods. How will those, who have lost their jobs and daily income, be able to feed their families in the coming weeks and months? How will the elderly in townships, one of the most vulnerable groups to infection, be protected?

As President Cyril Ramaphosa said when he addressed the nation, "Those who have resources, those who are healthy, need to assist those who are in need and who are vulnerable." That is exactly what the dairy farmers in South Africa pledge to do.

The Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) of South Africa was approached by the dairy farmers, wishing to contribute towards the government’s endeavours to fight or mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic by donating up to 1% of their daily milk production to feed our most vulnerable and needy members of society.

The country’s dairy farmers wanted to demonstrate the dairy industry’s commitment to building a healthy society through the consumption of a nutritious, affordable, and accessible source of food.

To support our dairy farmers, we have approached some of our dairy processors and they have been incredible with processing and packaging the donated milk free of charge in support of the project.

This is an opportunity to join hands and demonstrate the seriousness with which the dairy industry perceives this pandemic and the industry’s commitment to supporting South Africa’s battle against COVID-19. The MPO firmly believes that our industry has one of the best products, namely milk, to support this endeavour.

We wish to raise funds to support our dairy farmers with transporting their donated milk to the processors that are willing to support the project.

We would also like to raise funds to continue to assist in distributing the milk throughout the country to already existing, reputable, and recognised NPO's that can add the milk to their food parcels to distribute to the vulnerable and needy. We have also identified orphanages and old age homes where milk can be distributed to.

We are raising funds to assist our Farmers Associations with their #PayingFoodForward projects and distribution of food and milk parcels.

Our campaign will ensure that milk and milk products, which are nutrient-rich, contain all the essential amino acids, are rich in protein, and is packed with nutrients, will reach communities that are desperate for healthy, nutritious food sources. The funds raised will be used to transport the milk from the farmer that donates his milk to the processor, who donates the processing and packaging free of charge. Then the funds will be used to distribute the milk to the most vulnerable and needy communities throughout the country with the help of already existing NGO's. The funds will also go towards the distribution of milk and milk products to orphanages and old age homes identified throughout the country.

*Funds raised will be paid directly into the relevant institution’s verified bank account.*
