Why a bus is important to the Cape Leopard Trust Environmental Education Project
Our work is heavily dependent on offering schools and youth groups transport in order that we can reach all demographics and rural communities on the fringes of leopard areas in the Western Cape. Yes, we could possibly use our passenger vehicle and offer presentations at schools as an alternative, but we cannot stress enough how environmental learning is enhanced and more effective in terms of enabling behaviour change if we can transport our groups out into the wild. Our focus is to address environmental challenges such as water and food security through our learning material, and create opportunities for young people to consider future careers in the Green Economy.
Our ultimate goal is to make sure we continue to offer a programme that has far reaching impacts, primarily because children get real exposure in nature. Without a passenger vehicle to deliver our unique outreach programme, our ability to create future advocates to help us protect environmental heritage will be severely compromised.
Our current bus is aging and forms a vital part of our education programme. It has enabled us to extend our reach to school and community groups that would otherwise not be able to afford transport to go on excursions. Being able to provide transport is critical for making it possible for groups to attend camps. The bus is still in fair working condition and regularly serviced, though the Cederberg roads are rough and we have had to replace the shocks, steering rack and the suspension had to be fixed. We have done a total of 150000 km’s running camps and outing in the bus. We are so pleased that the NLC sponsored this bus for us in a previous cycle and know that it will have a long legacy. We would however love to retire the current bus to operate on normal tar roads for sole use in the Cape Town programme and to this end we ask that the public strongly consider funding for a more apt vehicle for the dirt roads in the Cederberg.
The dirt roads have been adding lots of wear and tear on the bus since we have had to replace the shocks, steering rack and the suspension had to be fixed. We find that little bolts are being shaken loose and a lot of time is required to keep the bus in top notch and safe for use with groups. Ideally we would love to purchase a new bus to continue operating optimally in the safest way possible.

The Cape Leopard Trust
The Cape Leopard Trust is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation engaged in innovative research, conservation and education projects established to facilitate and promote the conservation of biological diversity, with a focus on the Cape mountain leopard as a flagship species. Since its inception in 2004, the CLT has gradually gained momentum with a number of projects currently running in the Western and Northern Cape.
The Cape Leopard Trust is made up of a small, but highly dedicated, educated and enthusiastic team. Our employees are spread across a number of project areas in the Cederberg, Boland, Namaqualand, Cape Peninsula and Gouritz corridor mountains, and include research on leopards, caracals and jackal. We also run high impact environmental education projects in the Cederberg and greater Cape Town area.
