A Home for Fortunate

Personal message

Fortunate witnessed a serious crime - she fled for her life, loosing her job in the process. She lives with 4 other family members in a mud hut, and now one of the walls has crumbled down. We are going to build a new home for her family.

Who Are We?

There is a group of us who are involved in our local community through church. Larry is one of the group members, and this is his story - we are working together to make a difference in Fortunate's life...

Why Fortunate?

Larry met Fortunate about 18 months ago when she started attending the same church as him. She was working for a trader in Botha's Hill area, for very little, and she witnessed a heinous crime. She felt strongly that she needed to resign for her own safety, and has been unemployed until recently.

Larry had heard that Furtunate's home was in a bad state, and when he gave her a lift home one day, he became very concerned at the reality of her situation. Her house is built from mud and sticks, and the walls were looking very precarious. He was fearful that the one wall was going to collapse, as there was a huge crack and the wall was leaning over and hanging on by a loose thread.

Larry started putting together a plan to build her a new house, but due to limited resources, it's taken a while. In the interim, his fears came to life when a wall collapsed almost landing on Fortunate's 87 year old mother, who was at home alone. Without the wall as a support, the roof is now in danger of coming down too.

Fortunate owns the land but their situation is bad. Fortunate, her 3 children and Gogo, have 2 double and 1 single bed in 1 room, and that's how they're living.

They are the happiest people and expect nothing. They have no idea that we are trying to put something together. Fortunate has a prolific vegetable garden and grows most of the food they eat. They have never asked for any help, but need it very badly.

Our Plan

We have considered trying to use the existing structure, but as you can see from the pictures, it is so badly built that it would only provide a temporary solution.

Larry has put together a plan of a house that we would like to build for her. Larry is in the cupboard business, and his suppliers will donate materials for a kitchen and bedroom cupboards. He will build and install them for her. Larry also has taps, and has someone who will donate 300 building blocks, and charge cost for the balance. Fortunate has 300 blocks on site. We need funding to pay a block-layer, plumber and electrician, and to buy any outstanding materials that we can't get donated.

Unless we can find suppliers to donate, the following is still to be purchased:

  • Building blocks
  • Simple roofing materials
  • Cement
  • Builders sand
  • Plant hire for leveling the land
  • Plumbing materials
  • Electric materials
  • Solar geyser (funds permitting)

We know that there are millions out there with needs, and also that 4 walls and a roof would be more than adequate, considering what she has, but we would love her to have something more.

In addition to our existing sponsors and donors, we are looking to raise a minimum of R10,000 to fund materials and labour needed. The more funds we raise, the better the home we can build. We would love to be able to provide a solar geyser, a modest but adequate kitchen area, and a small bathroom. They currently use a long-drop toilet at the bottom of the garden - it would be an absolute luxury to get a flushing toilet installed. While this is not our priority, it would certainly be an amazing finishing touch if we were able to raise the necessary funds.

We believe that this unexpected act of charity will change the lives of Fortunate and her family, and allow them to focus more on becoming self-reliant, and less on worrying about their house collapsing.

The Team

Larry owns a business which specialises in kitchen design software, and another business which supplies and fits kitchens. He is a father to 11 children, and lives in Hillcrest. David is the Managing Director of a consulting company focusing on helping large enterprises automate and streamline business processes. He has 3 boys with one on the way, also living in Hillcrest.

Supported by their colleagues, friends, church and family, Larry and David are on a mission to make a difference to the lives of others in need, one person at a time.
